Word of the Week: Rest

Rest (noun & verb):

  1. Noun: A state of relaxation, stillness, or inactivity. A sacred pause.

  2. Verb: To cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh, or recover strength.

Ah, rest. The thing we all say we should do but rarely make time for. We live in a world that glorifies hustle, rewards overwork, and pats people on the back for pushing through exhaustion like it’s an Olympic sport. (Spoiler alert: It’s not.)

But here’s the truth—when you don’t rest, your body and mind will force you to. And usually, not in a cute way. (I've randomly burst into tears in the grocery store aisle when burned out.)

Rest Looks Different for Everyone

Rest isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, it’s curling up with a good book. For others, it’s a long walk, a nap, or saying no to that thing they really don’t want to do. Rest can be active (yoga, a slow morning stretch) or completely still (yes, lying on the couch binge-watching your comfort show counts).

The key? Recognizing what replenishes you—and doing it.

Prioritizing Rest is Non-Negotiable

We’ve all been guilty of saying, “I’ll rest when I’m done with everything.” But let’s be honest—when is everything ever done? (Never. The answer is never.)

Rest needs to be a priority, not an afterthought. Because when you don’t give yourself permission to pause, your body will shut down. And no, a five-minute scroll on your phone doesn’t count as real rest.

Set Boundaries Around Rest

Rest requires boundaries. That means saying no to things that drain you, scheduling downtime like it’s an important meeting (because it is), and not feeling guilty about it. If someone is offended by your need for rest, that’s their issue—not yours.

You are not a machine. You are a human being, and human beings require rest to function. Period.

Rest is a Divine Practice

Here’s the thing: Rest isn’t just important—it’s holy. Across cultures and spiritual traditions, rest is seen as sacred. The idea of a sabbath, of quiet, of stepping back—it’s built into the rhythm of life for a reason. Even the universe takes a break (hello, nighttime).

So if you’re feeling guilty about resting, remember this: You are meant to rest. It’s not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Remember: Burnout Isn’t a Badge of Honor

Pushing through exhaustion isn’t a flex. Running on fumes doesn’t make you stronger—it makes you tired.

And if you’re waiting for someone to give you permission to rest, here it is:

Rest. Now. (Seriously. Go lie down, close your eyes, breathe deeply. You deserve it.)
