Word of the Week: Legacy

Legacy (noun): The ripple effect of your everyday choices—the conversations, kindness, and care that echo beyond your lifetime in the lives you’ve touched.
The word legacy sounds a little intimidating, doesn’t it? Like you need to be a wildly successful entrepreneur, rescue puppies on the weekend, and have a memoir written by 40 to even qualify.
But legacy isn’t just about what you leave in your will. It’s not just about monuments or millions.
It’s about how you show up every day—in all the messy, beautiful, frustrating, real parts of life. It’s the energy you bring, the way you treat people, the moments you choose to stay soft when you could go hard.
I think a lot about the legacy I want to leave behind—especially for my family and my community. I want to be someone who made others feel seen. Someone who made a difference in ways that lasted, even if they weren’t loud or public.
But if I’m being honest? I often feel like I’m not doing enough.
I see people out protesting, leading movements, making bold, public displays of their commitment. And I respect that deeply. But it’s not my approach.
Big crowds make me nervous. Years ago, I was in a bar shooting, and that experience stays with me. My body still reacts to large gatherings in ways I don’t always expect. So I’ve learned to trust a different path—one that feels more true to who I am.
My approach to change is small. Personal. Often one-on-one. A conversation over tea. A kind word in a hard moment. A helping hand when no one’s watching.
That’s the kind of legacy I want to build.
And let’s be clear: some days, legacy feels like a luxury. There are bills to pay, people to care for, and a to-do list that might actually be growing in secret while I sleep. Sometimes I’m just tired. Like, “fall asleep in the driveway with the car still running” tired.
But here’s the twist: your legacy isn’t built on hustle. It’s built on clarity. And clarity comes from knowing what matters to you.
That’s where your values come in.
When you take the time to explore what you actually care about—what lights you up, what gives your life meaning—you begin to move with intention. You start making choices that feel aligned. You stop trying to live someone else’s version of a “big life” and start living yours.
Even when you’re tired. Even when the world feels heavy. Even when no one sees it but the people closest to you.
Legacy can be grassroots.
It can be gentle.
It can look like healing a generational wound in your family.
Like showing up for your neighbors.
Like being the first to apologize.
Like offering grace when it would be easier to give judgment.
So this week, instead of asking yourself, “What should I be doing with my life?”, try asking, “What do I want to stand for?”
Let that question lead you.
Because the quietest legacies often last the longest.
One beautifully imperfect, human-sized step at a time.
