Parenting Kids with Extra Needs: Intro to Sensory Processing with Corrie Lukkes

Does your child respond strongly to loud noises or itchy clothes? Or perhaps they get overwhelmed easily and break down at large gatherings or appear visibly exhausted after school.

Your child could be having trouble processing the amount of information they are receiving from their five senses.

MDW is proud to host Occupational Therapist Corrie Lukkes of My Recess Therapy in St. Charles and talk about sensory processing and overload on January 21, 2023.

In this 1-hour session, Corrie and MDW founder Elizabeth Rago will explore the following questions to help moms understand the often misunderstood responses to sensory overload and what we can do as caretakers to help our kiddos

  • What is Sensory Processing?

  • Why does overwhelm occur?

  • How can I prevent Sensory Overwhelm?

  • What does sensory overwhelm look like in regard to behavior? (For kids - stimming, yelling, shutdown, anger, hitting/For adults - anxiety, short fuse, labored breathing, watery eyes)

  • How can I identify triggers?

  • Helpful suggestions for coping skills

"I have always been passionate about the care I provide when working with children and their families as they journey through care.

My therapy philosophy is to make every session both fun and functional – seeing a child laughing while learning is the best motivation to be the best therapist I can be. I love seeing children (and their families) grow, learn, and develop through the therapeutic process." - Corrie Lukkes
