5 Steps to Making a Vision Board: Slow Down, Reflect, and Get Creative

Life moves fast. Between work, errands, and everything else, we’re constantly on the go. That’s why creating a vision board is such a powerful and grounding activity. It’s your chance to slow down, reflect on what truly matters to you, and get creative in a way that feels fun and fulfilling.

A vision board isn’t about perfection—it’s about taking the time to reflect on the future you want to create and capturing the feelings and goals that inspire you. No rules. Just inspiration.

Ready to get started? Here’s how to make a vision board that reflects you.

1. Gather Your Supplies (and Let Your Creativity Flow)

The beauty of making a vision board is that it’s as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. You don’t need a ton of supplies to get started, just a few essentials:

  • Poster board, corkboard, or a notebook: A blank canvas is where the magic begins. Keep in mind you don't have to use a posterboard. I use a notebook and create my vision board in the front inside cover. This way I have it with me wherever I go. I really love this floral notebook (below) from Pretty Pages.

  • Magazines, photos, printouts: Look for images that inspire you, or print out things you’ve found online. The more personal, the better. If you don't have any magazines, do a simple "all-call" on Facebook and you'll have more donations than you can handle.

  • Glue, regular tape, or washi tape: While there's no need for fancy adhesives, simple tape or glue is fine, there is something fun about washi tape. Scotch has a huge variety of fun tape and I usually find them at Target

  • Markers, pens, or paint: Add a personal touch with handwritten quotes or doodles. My favorite markers are flair pens from Papermate.

  • Stickers: Stickers are a fun, easy way to add extra personality to your board. You can find inspirational ones, floral patterns, motivational words, or even a cute set with your favorite animals—whatever resonates with you. I LOVE everything that artist Kristin Heldt creates. Her paper goods are gorgeous and bring a dash of pretty to my day. These stickers are my fave for my vision board.

The most important thing is to make this time your own. Don’t rush—take time to explore your supplies, flip through magazines, and get excited about the process. There’s no need to overthink it. The goal is to have fun with it.

2. Reflect on Your Future: Focus on How You Want to Feel

A vision board isn’t just about what you want to accomplish; it’s about how you want to feel. Do you want to feel more confident, creative, peaceful, or adventurous? These emotions are the foundation of your board.

Before you start clipping, take a moment to reflect on the feelings you want to invite into your life. Think about your values, your passions, and your dreams for the future. How do you want to show up in the world?

For example, maybe you want to feel more balanced, so you might include peaceful nature scenes or calming colors. Maybe you’re dreaming of a career change and want to feel empowered—search for images that make you feel strong and inspired.

Or maybe you don't know HOW you want to feel. And that's okay.

Creating a vision board is all about slowing down and reconnecting with yourself. One helpful exercise to identify how you want to feel in the future is reminding yourself of your favorite things, hobbies, and interests.

This is your time to really tap into what matters most to you, and that’s the beauty of it. You’re creating a vision that resonates on a deeper level.

3. Let Your Intuition Guide You: Choose What Speaks to You

This part is all about being present and letting your intuition guide you. As you flip through magazines or scroll through your digital photos, don’t overthink the images you’re drawn to.

If an image makes you smile or gives you a sense of calm, cut it out and add it to your collection. Maybe it’s a picture of a sunset because you want more quiet, reflective moments in your life. Maybe it’s a photo of a person doing something you admire because it reflects an aspiration you have.

The beauty of this process is that it’s all about what feels right to you, not about perfection. No need to match color schemes or curate the perfect Pinterest board. Let your choices come from a place of intuition, not pressure.

4. Arrange Your Vision: Trust the Process

Now that you’ve got all your images and words in front of you, it’s time to arrange them on your board. This part is all about creativity and exploration. There’s no “right” way to do it—just play around with the placement and see what feels right.

You might start by grouping images that resonate with similar themes, like personal growth, travel, or relationships. Or, you can just let the images flow naturally, trusting that the right pieces will find their place.

As you arrange, take your time. There’s no rush. This is a moment to enjoy the creative process and reflect on the bigger picture. What themes emerge? What do you feel most excited about? This is your vision coming to life.

5. Add Your Personal Touch: Make It Yours

Once you’ve glued everything down, it’s time to make your vision board feel uniquely yours. This is where you can really get creative—add handwritten words, quotes, or affirmations that inspire you. Maybe there’s a mantra that speaks to you, like “I am worthy of success,” or “I trust the timing of my life.”

You can also add small details like doodles, sketches, or symbols that represent your dreams. These personal touches will help you connect even more deeply with your vision and make the board feel like it’s a reflection of your unique journey. I love the quote in the sticker below from Uplifter Sticker. Simple and powerful.

Once you’ve finished, step back and take it all in. How does it feel to look at your vision board? Hopefully, it makes you feel inspired, hopeful, and ready to take on your world.

A Vision Board is a Journey, Not a Destination

Remember, a vision board isn’t about creating something perfect—it’s about slowing down, reflecting on the future you want to create, and allowing yourself the time and space to dream. It’s a way to connect with your deepest desires and intentions without the pressure of perfection.

So, take your time. Trust your creativity. And most importantly, enjoy the process. Your vision board is a beautiful, personal representation of the journey you’re on, and it’s here to inspire and guide you as you move forward. There’s no right or wrong way to do it—just the way that feels right for you.

Take a deep breath, let your creativity flow, and know that your vision board is just the beginning of what’s to come.
